The Very Hungry Caterpillar by American children's author and illustrator Eric Carle was published in 1969 with its first publication created in Japan by Kaisei-Sha Publishing Co., after the late president's admiration towards the picture book.

The book went on to sell 55 million copies worldwide and translated to 70 different languages.
